The Raw Data....

BY THE NUMBERS:
The number of plastic water bottles sold in the US grew from 4 billion in 1997 to an estimated 26 billion in 2005 (Figure 3) while the number thrown away increased from 3.4 billion to 22 billion.

Infographic: Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour

* Bottled water wholesale dollar sales first exceeded $6 billion in 2000. By 2007, they topped $11.5 billion.

*In terms of volume by individual countries, North America boasts the two largest markets, the United States and Mexico, which together accounted for close to 29 percent of the world’s packaged water market in 2009.

 * "more than 2.4 billion pounds of plastic bottles were recycled in 2008. Although the amount of plastic bottles recycled in the U.S. has grown every year since 1990, the actual recycling rate remains steady at around ( ONLY) 27 percent".

* Each day in the US more than 60 million plastic water bottles are thrown away. Most end up in landfills or incinerators, and millions litter America’s streets, parks and waterways.
How can America be spurred on to recycle more?

* Americans are throwing away 22 billion plastic water bottles a year, are there not enough scrap bottles for plastics recyclers?

*Recycling rates for plastic PET bottles and other containers are higher in many other countries than in the US. For example, in 2004 the PET bottle recycling in the US was 5% compared with a rate of 80% in Sweden.

* Of the $2.6 million spent by the U.S. House of Representatives on food during a nine-month period from 2009 to 2010, more than 20 percent — $604,000 — was spent on bottled water.

*Even though plastic bottles are able to be recycled, only one in five water bottles are recycled. The rest of the bottles end up piled high in landfills.

*Recycling plastic bottles also reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills every year. According to the EPA, recycling just 1 ton of plastic material saves the approximately 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space.

The "3D ad. in bottle solution":

* I came up with new marketing idea and filed a patent app for it. It came to me when I saw two kids throw their water bottles out the window.

*the consumer drinks all the liquid from bottle ,he inserts the origami paper into empty bottle and it pops up in 3D vignette inside the bottle showing Dreamworks new movie of the week.

*A coupon giving the consumer 10% off something can be incorporated in the art i.e. entry to theater or free popcorn etc.

* The revenue stream comes from the advertiser i.e. Dream Works for their new kids movie of the week(example). They in turn supply Poland Springs water etc. with the art insert and 3 cents etc. to put art on side of bottle in a little sleeve.

* By putting QR codes on art in bottle and the end user will scan his phone across the bottle and get directed to Dreamworks Studio web site (example), a double hit for advertisers.

* Imagine the number of advertisers for this IP are endless, ie. Hollywood studios . Mattel, Ford, the Gap etc.

* Recycler's I have spoken to are excited because only 27% of the US consumer recycle plastic bottles, and recyclers are in need of inventory to their plants.

* Like the idea ? don’t like the idea? gotta better idea? Got more bottle stats? Ready to stand up and take action? Fed up with talk and no one putting together a meaningful solution to PET bottles trashing our planet?

Then Blog us back or call/email below….who knows you
just might make more of a difference than the average? …..and
make some bucks as well. If nothing grabs you here ….Then
do “friggen” something for some other planet friendly idea....

Random water bottle data

* The number of plastic water bottles sold in the US grew from 4 billion in 1997 to an estimated 26 billion in 2005 (Figure 3) while the number thrown away increased from 3.4 billion to 22 billion. Plastic bottle waste is not just a national problem in the US, it’s a national disgrace. Without a nationwide system of deposits, expansion of existing deposit laws or some other dramatic new collection infrastructure, America faces a growing mountain of plastic bottle waste with all of the resulting social and environmental consequences.
* Another barrier to increased recycling is lack of sufficient access to recycling collection
opportunities for products used away from home. Consumer data continue to show that the public wants additional opportunities to be able to recycle at public venues, offices,
recreational sites, schools, and retail establishments.

* Infographic: Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour

* Of the $2.6 million spent by the U.S. House of Representatives on food during a nine-month period from 2009 to 2010, more than 20 percent — $604,000 — was spent on bottled water.

* Bottled water wholesale dollar sales first exceeded $6 billion in 2000. By
2007, they topped $11.5 billion. Category sales declined to
$11.2 billion the following year and to less than $10.6 billion
in 2009.

* The Pacific Institute has estimated 20 million barrels of oil are used each year to make the plastic for water bottles.

* Although Europe ranks as the leading regional consumer
of bottled water, the largest national markets do not lie within
the continent’s borders. In terms of volume by individual
countries, North America boasts the two largest markets, the
United States and Mexico, which together accounted for close
to 29 percent of the world’s packaged water market in 2009.
